Civic Engagement, Community collaboration

During our community meeting on February 7, 2025, I spearheaded an initiative to raise awareness about our drinking water quality. Utilizing my data orientation skills, I presented a comprehensive report based on a water quality test I conducted. I also demonstrated applied empathy by engaging with community members to understand their concerns and collaboratively inquired about the lack of implementation of government schemes in our village. Through critical thinking and problem-solving, we collectively explored solutions to prevent water contamination and ensure safe consumption. Our community decided to construct a higher wall between the drain and the spring and design a steeper drain to prevent waste accumulation near the spring. This initiative not only highlighted the importance of civic responsibility but also fostered community collaboration, empowering us to take proactive steps towards a healthier environment.

In August, I embarked on a community project under the Trailblazer Fellowship with the Eastern Himalayan Foundation. Initially, understanding the community's needs and identifying a problem to address was challenging. However, a group call with Rinan Shah, a water researcher, and other fellows inspired me to focus on water quality issues in my community. To validate my assumptions, I conducted door-to-door surveys across 60 households, revising questions multiple times. This hands-on approach revealed the community's water quality concerns and solidified my commitment to the project. Leveraging my microbiology background, I decided to perform water quality testing, despite initial doubts about my capabilities. I sought guidance from my college professors, prepared a lab manual, and attended a SPARC workshop in Sikkim, which provided valuable insights and networking opportunities. After overcoming numerous challenges, including securing lab access and funding, I conducted extensive water testing and wrote a research paper to support my findings. This project not only confirmed the water quality issues but also mobilized my community towards collective action. The experience honed my problem-solving and community collaboration skills, and I discovered a deep passion for civic and environmental work. **Top Skills Activated:** 1. Problem Solving 2. Community Collaboration

I spearheaded a water quality assessment project in Middle Pandam Busty, a village below Chowrasta. Recognizing the urgent need for clean drinking water, I conducted a thorough needs assessment. I sought guidance from renowned researchers like Rinan Shah and received support from my professor, Abhijeet Chettri, who granted me permission to use the college laboratory to conduct tests. My actions aim to address the pressing issue of unsafe water, protect public health, and ensure access to clean, drinkable water for the community.
