Bio

I live in the Mumbai Suburban slum community. Since childhood, we have been facing various problems due to the non-availability of community toilets in our area, which does affect the lifestyle of the people as there is no space available to build the toilet. Most of the people from our society go to other societies, and some at their workplace to use Toilets. Also, there is no cleanliness and hygiene maintained which cause diseases.

engaged people through sessions

I had asked a few organisations for a collaboration session. One of the organisations named Save the Children works on WASH facilities in my locality. They invited me today for a meeting and they agree for the collaboration and for the longer run they want me to be a part of their WASH team as a volunteer.

Meeting with Ward officer- J.O. of my community -Visited N ward and got to know MCGM has started recruiting the NGO for sanitation before the monsoon - In the budget of MCGM.Under the Slum sanitation program. It is planned to construct 20,000 new toilets under Lot-12 in 2023-24. Also, approximately 3000 toilets constructed in the slums by the MHADA authority will be operated and maintained by the Corporation. - then contacted the solid waste management department and got an appointment with the J.O of my area. Meeting with Ward officer- J.O. of my community During the discussion I conveyed to the officer I wanted to know about sanitation programs in my area that MCGM is planning to get to know they are planning to have a toilet per home and will be in action sooner, then I focus on the people’s participation. They were ready for the session in my community. The officer was surprised as no residents came and asked for help. Then he willingly helped me and took my number and said whenever the session will be conducted he will be there. Meeting with Sanitation contractor The sanitation contractor and I had a discussion about the sanitation status, then he started asking me to take other communities as politically it is very dangerous and it was a very threatening type of conversation. But I calmly replied and in the end, he shared that we are able to plan new initiatives in our community along with the challenges the sanitation workers faced and people's participation in the process. Later he replied to me that after arranging the session he will come and give a few ideas to put a dustbin in the toilets, make demand for mobile toilets for physically challenged people. Visited NGO- PUKAR, PRAJA, BRM and Panni Haq samiti Visited the organisation as they also work on sanitation issues. I received the data of N ward of sanitation complaints from the past 3 years. It is s2760, 1574, and 1666 respectively. Also able to read and understand the possible ways like awarding the people about their rights. Also help me to handle the political situation and keep away from affecting the process by being transparent. In May month, I got a chance to present my problem statement with the Minister of Women and Child Development and Mangalprabhat Lodha as they visited Mumbai Municipal Corporation 'N ward of MCGM’. After that I had a chance to discuss with the Assistant head and Assistant engineer of Solid waste department where sir shared the importance of sanitation awareness among communities.

Fgd with residents According to the residents, the toilet issue is not as major as the community water problem is major. The answer to knowing why the toilet is not available in the toilet responses were- 1. In our community we don't have water how water will be there in the toilets 2. for that water connection is not provided 3. they were not aware that the water connection is mandatory in community toilets. Major points discussed: Not clean frequently, weekly cleaning required, No ventilation because of other splitting and cigarettes, more toilets needed including western toilets for senior citizens, broken doors of toilets, late for school and work because of line in the toilet. Electricity is needed and children feel scared to visit there. Water facility is required and at least one drum should be kept there. About Nallas Due to Smell not being able to stand in gully, not being clean from long time, needs water to clean, nallas should be completely covered, mosquitoes and rats are increasing which leads to cause diseases like dengue, malaria, many people throw waste in the nallas instead of dustbin.
